On Obedience
"And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." (Jos 24:15)
For Joshua to be able to make such a statement on the day of his death, he must have had unshakable confidence in his house that no matter what happens, he and his whole house will serve the Lord. Since the purity and holiness of the house is the husband's responsibility, since he is answerable for them all before God, it must have been very comforting for Joshua to know that on the Day of Judgment, he can present his family to the LORD unblemished (Eph 5:27). This should be the goal of every husband and father, every head of his house, and it is a tremendous responsibility. Therefore, obedience plays an important role in the polygamous family just like in every other family.
