Simple Living At Odds With the World
This weekend was the first sunny, almost summer-like weekend here, and we spent it outside most of the time, enjoying God's creation by the lake. And no, we did not go to the lake where everybody else goes for we prefer quietness and solitude over being seen, we prefer watching herons and geese rather than other people in their activities, and we also prefer listening to birds chirping and the bullfrog's call rather than a radio blaring or other people's vain babblings.
One of the topics we discussed this weekend was this:
There seems to be one thing that stands between God and many people nowadays, and that is the fact that they care about what other people think. Most people care more about what their relatives, friends, neighbors,co-workers and even strangers they pass by on the streets think about them than about what God says is important. They dress up, use make up and elaborate hairdos, buy a car that can compete with their neighbor's, and try to blend in with society as best as they can, while at the same time standing out as being special, yet not "strange" or "weird" or "peculiar". Even if they claim to believe in God, they try to be just like the other girls at college, and don't even find it odd that you cannot tell a Christian lady from any other girl there, they all look the same, wear the same clothing, eat the same things, and are all equally carried away by the cares and concerns of the world. It's obvious that people place man above God in this respect, since they care more about what everyone else thinks than what God wants.
Following God's word puts us at odds with the world, at every turn, as Jesus said it would, so we feel comforted and comfortable being God's "peculiar people". As a home schooler, you might not face the same problems today that you did a few years ago, but you will meet people who find it offensive that you think you are the better teacher for your child than any other "trained professional" will ever be, even if, like me, you actually are such a trained professional. Wearing a head covering, you will be looked at funny by people around you, and if you cannot chime in with the conversation about yesterday night's TV show, oh well, you will be the odd one out there, too. If you rather sit somewhere quietly by yourself reading your bible than going to the movies, a restaurant, the bar at night, you will have "nothing going for you" in your life, according to most people's standards.
Are you prepared to be the odd one out ? Are you prepared to follow God's plan for us instead of running after all the things society deems necessary or important nowadays ? Are you prepared to follow God's Law-Word in the big as well as in the small things ? And are you looking for like-minded people in this endeavor ? Visit Joshuah's House, and find out if we are like-minded people for you, and don't hesitate to contact us to find out more.
