Simple Self Sufficient Living
Let us have a closer look at what self sufficiency really means.
First of all, in our book, self sufficiency is a term that only relates to our relationship with other human beings who are not part of the multi-generational family. It does not at all imply being independent from God. A self sufficient family rather relies completely on God and in no way on other people. This is the basis we are operating on and arguing from, and more accurately, we should call it "God sufficiency" instead of self sufficiency, but will stick with the more common term for the time being.
Secondly, self sufficiency has nothing to do with being independent from nature, a state many people try to achieve nowadays as best as they can. You can see this tendency as well in summer as in winter, when you meet people in shorts at the gas station even though it's 20F outside, or if you wish you brought a jacket when you enter any type of air conditioned shop or office building in the summer time. Quite the opposite is true for a self-sufficient family that strives to live in harmony with nature, enjoying all season according to what they bring, rather than trying to defy nature and feeling good about it.
Thirdly, and lastly for the moment, self sufficiency does not necessarily imply a complete material independence from society, but even more importantly a cultural independence, so to speak. A self sufficient family does not have to go with any type of fashion or the latest cultural paradigm, but relies on one standard only - God's word and God's judgment and God's solutions for how to live so that it might be well with us and our children.
So, no matter how you slice it, living a self sufficient life means relying on the fact that what God provides is sufficient, always has been and always will be.
Tomorrow and in the days to come, we will specify what this "God sufficiency" looks like in everyday life - stay tuned for more. In the meantime, visit Joshuah's House and see what else we have to say about simple living and other matters of a life according to God's word.
