Does 2 Samuel 12:7-8 show God's approval of polygamy?
Yes indeed, 2 Samuel 12:7-8 shows God's approval of polygamy!
This has been a question that we have heard several times recently, and we also use it to prove the case of Biblical Plural Marriage as a completely valid form of marriage in our continuing work of apologetics. From our perspective, it's as plain as the nose on your face, if you allow scripture to speak.
In order to accept the plain teaching of scripture in this regard, or in any other, one must possess the intellectual honesty to allow it to speak, and to accept what it says, rather than approach scripture with a set of presuppositions which then need to be either proved or disproved. This is allowing your opinion to shape scripture and not the other way around, and is unfortunate. Let them who have ears to hear, hear!
In order to be consistent, if we accept the results of the fall and the implications thereof, we must admit that there is no system of "natural law" available to the sinful "reason" of man. Understanding this will go a long way towards understanding the "plain truth" of scripture, when it comes to polygamy (plural marriage), slavery, economics, family life, or any other aspect of living. After all, our total life should be lived in submission to God's Word, and not just parts of it.
We are offering an apologetic on the subject of polygamy on our website. It is in process, with sections being published as they are completed.
