Jeffs trial: Jury candidates grilled on polygamy views, knowledge of case

ST. GEORGE

"Attorneys have
resumed individual questioning today of potential jurors for the trial
of Warren S. Jeffs, following Monday interviews that offered insight
into county residents' knowledge of the case and their feelings about
the polygamous sect he leads.

"Lawyers are emphasizing that polygamy and arranged marriage
are not on trial. But candidates are being asked their opinions of
both. "It's part of their religion, so we can't really judge them on that," a young man from LaVerkin said in one interview."

Warren Jeffs: Prophet or monster or propaganda piece?

"Is Warren Jeffs a monster or a man of God? Is he one of the most dangerous men in the United States or a side show on the freakish fringe of America?

That's some of what jurors in St. George, Utah, will have to sort out over the next two weeks as they try to determine whether the prophet of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is guilty of two counts of being an accomplice to the rape of a 14-year-old girl.

He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison."

Polygamy Movement Opposes Warren Jeffs, Says National Polygamy Rights Leader

"National Polygamy Advocate, Mark Henkel, said, “As Warren Jeffs’ trial* begins this coming week, it is important for the media to get their facts straight about polygamy and polygamy rights. For one example, not only does Jeffs’ trial actually have absolutely nothing to do with polygamy, but the overall national movement for polygamy rights has repeatedly stated its opposition to Warren Jeffs and his rogue sect anyway.” Henkel offered three essential clarifications for the media to use, and he has made himself available for interviews."
